Podcast: The Liberty Movement at CPAC and Rand Paul

Here’s the link for the brand new podcast!  We’re back to a full two hours, and with a major programming announcement!  As always, follow me on Twitter at @jeffscottshow and find me on Facebook at Jeff Scott Show.

Ohio Senator Rob Portman announced his support for gay marriage last week, citing his gay son who came out of the closet.  He does a great job of tying conservative principles to his shift here, which is something that lots of conservatives would do well to pay attention to, especially since a new poll shows 58% support for gay marriage.  Hillary Clinton also announced that she will run for President in 2016 by coming out in favor of gay marriage.

At CPAC last week, there was a definite generational shift in favor of gay marriage.  In fact, there was a huge shift towards liberty, including Rand Paul winning the CPAC straw poll with a very young set of voters.

Rand Paul introduced the “Life at Conception Act,” which looks like an unenforceable anti-choice bill.  Then, when asked about exceptions to his law, he gave a perfect answer.  I have to say, I’m really confused by this.  I’m also, even as a pro-choicer, disgusted by Planned Parenthood’s “National Abortion Provider Appreciation Day.”  Are we going to have similar days for proctologists, like “National Colonoscopy Provider Appreciation Day” or “National Prostate Exam Provider Appreciation Day?”

Paul also gave a speech on immigration, which the media quickly portrayed as a “path to citizenship,” which it isn’t.  Paul gave a much different policy prescription than the pro-amnesty “Gang of 8.”  Paul actually laid out his policy over a month ago, but nobody noticed because he hadn’t gotten the media spotlight yet.

The Euro Zone has committed what amounts to bank robbery in bailing out Cyprus, which is the beginning of the end of deposit insurance.  A European MP is telling people to get their money out of the Euro Zone and invest in their own country.  The government of Cyprus is pushing back, but that could still cause big problems for them.  The White House is watching what’s going on (and taking notes).

The RNC issued a 100-page report on why they lost in 2012 and how to win going forward, and while they have some good points, they really missed the point with regards to policy.  One of their good points was about getting rid of caucuses, which angered at least one Rand Paul advisor.

Despite spending more and more of our economy on retirement for old folks, you’ll never really be able to depend on retirement unless you’re already there.  Some Americans are leaving the country to retire in cheaper locations, which is a good idea to consider since most people aren’t saving enough to retire anyway.

Harry Reid blamed the sequester for a training accident that killed 7 Marines.  Meanwhile, the federal government is spending money on studying lesbians’ drinking, duck penises, and Civil War veterans’ families.  Also, Obama’s senior advisor has a chief of staff.

Republican House Speaker John Boehner says that he trusts Obama.  Um…why?  This is the problem—the left is engaged in full-on ideological warfare, and the Republicans are still trying to be friends with them.

Both Boehner and Paul Ryan agree with Obama that there is no immediate debt crisis.  Are they stupid, or just worthless?

Dianne Feinstein accidentally gave away her true gun-control agenda last week.  She’s trying creeping tyranny.  Apparently just taking pictures of your kid holding a gun (more responsibly than Feinstein, by the way) is enough to get a visit from the police in New Jersey.

The President has a food taster.  Does anybody else get the sense that the Presidency is becoming more like royalty?

After his marathon filibuster of two weeks ago, Bill Kristol attacked Rand Paul for running to Obama’s left.  Since when has it been left-wing to support the Constitution?  I’m guessing Kristol will be joining Lindsey Graham and Carl Levin in pushing for military involvement in Syria, which would be a big mistake.  This is a great opportunity for Republicans (minus the super-hawks like McCain and Graham) to become the anti-war party.

The University of Colorado has appointed a professor of “conservative thought and policy.”  That’s nice, and they made a great choice, but is this what qualifies as “balance?”

What happens when an entire city is completely dependent on government handouts?  The city runs on the boom-and-bust cycles of when the government rations are distributed.

Obama is using executive power to accomplish many of the things that Congress won’t pass for him.

The New York Times wants to use shame to discourage teen pregnancy.  Can we do the same for dependency?  Of course, this shame is a great idea, considering that 58% of lower and middle class women give birth to their first child out of wedlock.

The new Pope has said that he wants to have a Church that is poor and for the poor.  Other religious institutions would do well to pay attention here, because it’s religion that’s supposed to be doing that, not the state.

Want to see the failure of single-payer health care?  Look no further than the Veterans Affairs health care system.

CNN anchors were grieving the ruined lives of rapists.  You keep it classy, CNN.

Obama’s limo broke down in Israel after somebody put in the wrong kind of gas.

A woman in Maryland was ticketed for driving 63 mph in the left lane of a 65 mph zone.  More of this, please.

Apparently sex in space can cause disease, including cancer.  That’ll really put a damper on volunteers to go to Mars…

A teenager in Chicago shot himself in the groin and blamed ninjas for it.

Apparently it has rained so much in Australia that there is a shortage of kangaroo scrotums.  I wish I was kidding.

A man in Louisville, KY licked a woman’s neck after yelling “I am not a pedophile, I am a rapist.”  Thanks for clearing that up, dude.

A Wisconsin man has been banned from all libraries on earth after engaging in “lewd behavior” in a library.

A Connecticut television station is under fire for using pictures of women’s breasts in a video montage to celebrate “Women’s Day.”

There is now a smart phone device that serves as a breathalyzer.  This is brilliant.

This week’s Signs of the Downfall of Western Civilization come to us from government schools.  British schoolchildren are being banned from having best friends, and schools in St. Mary’s County, Maryland are banning birthday party invitations, hugs for children, and homemade treats for classes.

This week’s Schadenfreude of the Week is from Bill Maher, who is finally fed up with paying the confiscatory taxes in California.
